Funny That Way: Humor in LGBT Comics

In dramatic stories, they were the villain or the victim; in comedies, they were the butt of the joke. Perhaps this is why early gay comics were either overtly political or overly sexual – but hardly ever funny.

How has the nature of queer humor changed over time? Did the internalized homophobia and self-loathing of the past inform queer humor in a way that has gone the way of the disco ball? If so, how has the mainstreaming of queer culture impacted what we call funny, or the situations we can now explore through humor?
